The Kalbajar mountains belong to the western upland side of Azerbaijan, contrasting with the low country towards the Caspian. These named high points sit within that mountainous interior, rather than the Greater Caucasus peaks along the country's far northern margin.
Azerbaijan's mountain regions surround and contrast with its lower steppe landscapes. Kalbajar lies on the western side of this pattern, geographically separate from both the Caspian shore and the Nakhchivan exclave. That distinction gives the group a specific inland identity within the country.
