Shkhara, Ushba and Donguzorun place this group in the Greater Caucasus mountain setting. The selected summits occupy separate positions along northern Georgia's highland margin, contrasting with the lower valleys and Black Sea-facing landscapes elsewhere in the country.
Georgia's two great mountain belts frame very different river basins: the Greater Caucasus above the northern valleys and the Lesser Caucasus to the south. Shkhara belongs to the higher northern wall, while the low Kolkhida plain opens towards the Black Sea.
