Puncak Jaya and the other selected elevations belong to the rugged interior of Papua, rather than Indonesia's better-known volcanic chains farther west. The surrounding highland landscape forms one regional setting within an archipelago whose mountain terrain is divided between many islands.
Papua's mountains are part of the immense island of New Guinea, with substantial relief rising inland from tropical lowlands. Puncak Jaya makes this an expedition-scale destination; the surrounding mountains should be understood in that highland context rather than compared with a volcanic day walk on Java.
