Discover Sulaymaniyah
Northeastern Iraq contains mountain terrain that contrasts strongly with the country's broad central and southern plains. These selected high points lie within that upland setting, near the wider mountain country of the Iran–Iraq frontier rather than the low river basin.
The northern mountain climate differs sharply from Iraq's desert and river plains. Cold winters can bring substantial snowfall to the ranges near Iran and Turkey, and spring snowmelt feeds downstream river systems: these heights are part of the wider Mesopotamian water landscape.
