Malchin and the other selected summits lie in Mongolia’s far western Altai setting, where high relief contrasts with the much broader steppe and Gobi landscapes farther east. This frontier mountain country forms a particular geographical region rather than the dominant surface throughout Mongolia.

Malchin and Khüiten belong to the Tavan Bogd mountain landscape, where international frontiers meet the high Altai. The Potanin Glacier lies below these summits, giving this western corner a markedly different character from Mongolia's open steppe and the dry Gobi basins.
