The named high points belong to the West Bank's dissected upland landscape. Their setting is distinct from Gaza's coastal plain and from the lower Jordan Valley to the east, within a region where nearby changes in elevation create marked geographical contrasts.
The uplands descend towards the Jordan Valley, producing a strong contrast over relatively short distances. Mount Ebal near Nablus and the Mount of Olives by Jerusalem give the selection distinct northern and southern anchors, within terrain cut by valleys rather than a single summit ridge.
