Ismail Samani and the other selected peaks belong to Tajikistan's Pamir high country. This setting is distinct from the lower southwestern valleys and northern Fergana region, within a nation whose geography is dominated by substantial mountain systems.
The Pamirs form a high mountain region where major ranges and deeply cut valleys converge. Ismail Samani belongs to a different part of that landscape from the Tanymas country. These are substantial mountain systems within eastern Tajikistan, with a regional scale quite different from the country's narrow lowland corridors farther west.
