Nanlaud and the other selected high points focus on Pohnpei, one of Micronesia's high islands. This rugged interior differs sharply from the country's many low atoll settings, with the surrounding ocean separating it from the mountain landscapes on other islands.
Pohnpei's volcanic interior is one of the mountainous landscapes within the Federated States of Micronesia. Heavy tropical rainfall is an important feature of these eastern islands, and the contrast between steep high-island terrain and low coral atolls is fundamental to the country's geography.
