Discover Djibouti
Djibouti's relief includes plateaus, hills and low depressions beside the Gulf of Tadjoura region. These named elevations focus on its inland high ground, within a dry landscape whose contrasts come from volcanic terrain and changes in level rather than a broad alpine chain.
Low depressions are as distinctive in Djibouti as its higher ground: Lake Assal occupies one such basin below sea level. The surrounding plateaus and hills create sharp changes in relief within an intensely hot, dry environment close to the meeting of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
