Discover Northern Red Sea
Eritrea changes sharply from high plateau and mountain terrain towards the Red Sea coast. The selected mountains sit within that varied eastern African landscape, where inland elevations and lower arid country have different physical settings despite their relative proximity.
The central highlands are generally cooler and wetter than Eritrea's Red Sea strip, while western hills and lowlands have a more semiarid character. This variation is particularly important here: a single national description of hot desert cannot represent every mountain and plateau setting.
