Mont Bengoué and the other selected elevations belong to Gabon's inland hills and uplands. Their setting contrasts with the lower Atlantic coastal plain, within an equatorial country whose terrain includes extensive rolling interior landscapes rather than one continuous high mountain barrier.
Warmth and humidity are characteristic of Gabon's equatorial setting throughout the year. The interior hills sit within this tropical environment, while the Atlantic coast and lower river country have different forms of relief. The group concentrates on inland elevations rather than the country's maritime edge.
