The selected high points focus on Ghana's eastern upland landscape, away from the broad lower plains and much of the Atlantic-facing south. Their local relief belongs to a region of hills rather than a continuous national high mountain system.
The Volta landscape combines inland water, lower plains and a line of eastern hills extending towards Togo. These border uplands give the itinerary its local character: modest summit heights sit within a much wider tropical landscape shaped by plateaus and river drainage.
