Sapitwa and Chambe place this destination around the Mulanje highlands. The selected peaks belong to southern Malawi's mountain country, a different setting from the lakeshore lowlands and other elevated plateaus that make up the country's wider physical geography.

Mulanje rises as a distinct mountain mass in southern Malawi, with Sapitwa its highest summit and Chambe another recognisable part of the group. This compact mountain focus contrasts with the country's long north–south form and the much broader lowland landscape around Lake Malawi.
