Discover Black River
The Black River high ground and the other selected mountains occupy different parts of Mauritius's interior. Their common setting is a volcanic island above the Indian Ocean, where uplands contrast with lower coastal land rather than joining a continental mountain chain.
The Mauritian mountains form broken remnants around the island's central plateau, rather than a single continuous range. Together with the lower coastal plain and offshore reefs, that arrangement gives the island a distinctive profile in which inland high ground remains close to the ocean.
