Shimbiris and the other selected elevations belong to Somalia's northern mountain country. Their upland setting contrasts with the flatter plateau terrain that occupies much of the nation, providing a specific regional focus within the wider Horn of Africa landscape.
Shimbiris belongs to the Cal Madow highlands near the Gulf of Aden. The northern escarpments create a strong contrast between coastal country and the inland plateau. This concentration of mountain relief differs from Somalia's broader lowland and gently elevated landscapes, giving the selected group a recognisable northern regional identity.
