The selected mountains belong to South Sudan's southern upland setting, distinct from the broad northern plains and central Sudd wetland. This border-side relief provides a regional mountain landscape within a country otherwise strongly shaped by the White Nile and its lowlands.
The selected locations occupy the southeastern border country, where uplands continue towards Uganda and Kenya. This relief differs fundamentally from the White Nile's broad central basin. The mountains form part of a larger East African highland margin, rather than isolated extensions of the flat wetland landscape associated with the Sudd.
