Chambi and the other selected Jebel landmarks focus on Tunisia's western uplands. Their setting is distinct from the low Mediterranean coastal areas and from the Sahara farther south, within the country's broader transition from northern mountain country to southern desert.
The Chambi area belongs to the Atlas mountain system near the Algerian border. Valleys and upland plains divide the individual massifs of western Tunisia, rather than forming one unbroken crest. The surrounding country marks an inland transition between northern Mediterranean landscapes and the much drier southern basins and desert margins.
