These hills and mountains belong to eastern Zambia's inland landscape, where local high ground interrupts a much broader plateau. The setting differs from a continuous alpine chain, with individual elevations forming regional landmarks within the country's inland tropical landscape.
The selected locations occupy eastern Zambia around the wider Luangwa region. Here, local hills and escarpment country contrast with lower river landscapes within the plateau interior. Their geographical setting is different from the far northern lake basins or the southern Zambezi corridor, giving the grouping a specific eastern rather than nationwide focus.
