Three Peaks challenges in China
China's mountains cannot be understood as a single destination. Western plateaus and high ranges contrast with eastern plains and southern hills, making the choice of region fundamental to any mountain journey.
The landscapes of China
The high western ranges and plateaus are geographically distinct from the hills, basins and plains of the east. Even within western China, mountain groups are separated by large distances and very different environments. Naming a province or specific range gives an enquiry a workable geographical focus, avoiding the suggestion that three peaks anywhere in China naturally form a single journey.
