Three Peaks challenges in Hong Kong
Hong Kong's steep hills and mountains extend well beyond its urban skyline. The New Territories and outlying islands provide different upland settings, with lower ground concentrated toward the north.
The landscapes of Hong Kong
Hong Kong's hills and mountains extend across the New Territories and many of its islands, with more extensive lowland areas towards the north. Steep slopes are a major part of the territory's physical geography, despite the prominence of its coastal urban landscape.
The subtropical monsoon climate brings cooler, humid winters and hotter, wetter conditions from spring into summer. Mainland and island uplands provide different settings within a compact area. The contrast between hills, northern lowlands and the surrounding South China Sea helps explain the diversity of Hong Kong's mountain landscapes.
