Qurnat as Sawda anchors this group in Lebanon's northern high ground. The other selected mountains extend the geographical view eastwards, across a country where mountain ranges and inland valleys sit close to a narrow Mediterranean coastal strip.

Lebanon's relief is compressed between the Mediterranean and its inland frontier. The coastal mountains, intervening Bekaa Valley and eastern ranges form separate geographical units, so a journey between these high points crosses a landscape of parallel belts rather than one continuous ridge.
