Three Peaks challenges in Maldives
The Maldives is an Indian Ocean archipelago of low coral islands and atolls. Its landscape belongs to lagoons, reefs and the sea, so a mountain journey would need to look beyond the islands themselves.
The landscapes of Maldives
The Maldives is a country of low coral islands and atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean. Reefs, lagoons and the sea define its landscape; there is no native mountain range to turn into a conventional three peaks journey.
The atolls form elongated chains across the equatorial Indian Ocean, with small islands arranged around lagoons and reefs. Changes in island shape and surrounding water are much more significant than land elevation. This is a seascape whose interest comes from the structure of the archipelago, with no mountain interior hidden beyond the beaches.
