Discover South Korea Three Peaks
Hallasan, Jirisan and Seoraksan introduce three distinct sides of South Korea’s mountain landscape. Hallasan is the volcanic heart of Jeju Island, separated from the mainland by the sea. Jirisan’s Cheonwangbong belongs to an extensive southern mountain massif, while Seoraksan’s Daecheongbong rises above the rugged scenery of the north-east. Visiting the trio creates a journey across the country rather than a single connected mountain walk.
The contrast is the reason to travel: Jeju’s volcanic scenery, Jirisan’s forested slopes and Seoraksan’s rocky mountain setting each deserve their own place in the itinerary. Island connections and national park arrangements need to fit the time available. Tell us which season you have in mind and how you would like to combine the mountains with time in South Korea’s towns and cultural destinations.
The mountains
The three summits
Hallasan — Dongneung summit
Hallasan is the volcanic centre of Jeju Island. Dongneung is the public summit overlooking Baengnokdam crater; visiting requires the park’s summit reservation arrangements.
Jirisan (Cheonwangbong)
Cheonwangbong is Jirisan’s highest summit. It is also the highest mountain summit on the South Korean mainland.
Seoraksan (Daecheongbong)
Daecheongbong is the highest summit of Seoraksan. It rises above the national park’s rugged mountain landscape in north-eastern South Korea.
