Three Peaks challenges in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's south central mountains rise above extensive low plains. The highlands form a separate landscape from the tropical coast, but access to particular summits must not be assumed from their prominence.

The landscapes of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's south-central mountains rise above extensive low plains. The island's higher interior forms a concentrated upland region, while flatter and gently rolling terrain extends across much of the rest of the country towards the tropical coast. The contrast is geographical as well as visual.

Northeast and southwest monsoons influence rainfall at different times of year. The central highlands sit within this island-wide seasonal pattern but have a different elevation setting from the coast. This page explores that mountain region without assigning a fixed three-summit circuit to the country.
