Musala and Kalin focus attention on the Rila landscape, while Polezhan lies in the Pirin mountain region. This grouping therefore spans two distinct Bulgarian uplands, separated geographically rather than forming one continuous summit ridge across the southwest.
Southwestern Bulgaria's mountains are distinct from the Balkan range farther north and the country's broad Danubian and Thracian lowlands. Cold winters and warm summers bring seasonal change, but the Rila–Pirin grouping retains two geographical identities rather than becoming one continuous range.
