Discover Munster
Carrauntoohil and the other selected summits belong to southwestern Ireland's rugged uplands. This coastal-side mountain setting contrasts with the island's lower central plain, while the individual ranges and intervening valleys give Kerry several distinct areas of high ground.
Kerry's mountains stand within an Atlantic maritime climate, where moisture and changing cloud are persistent influences. Carrauntoohil provides the highest landmark, but the surrounding valleys divide the uplands into recognisable groups rather than a single uninterrupted wall of mountains across southwestern Ireland.
