The selected mountains focus on Dagestan, within Russia's southern Caucasus country. Their setting is far removed from the Siberian plains and Arctic regions, illustrating why Russian mountain destinations need a regional identity within such an extensive and varied national geography.
Dagestan occupies the eastern end of the Greater Caucasus, between high inland ranges and the Caspian lowlands. Deep river valleys divide its mountain country into smaller regions. The selected summits belong to this inland relief, where the transition towards the Caspian provides a broader geographical context beyond the individual mountain names.
