Gerlachovský, Slavkovský and Lomnický štít focus this group on one concentrated alpine region. The High Tatras belong to Slovakia's northern mountain country, contrasting with the lower southern basin landscapes and the other, separate upland ranges within the country.

These three summits occupy the High Tatras above the Poprad basin. Glacially shaped valleys divide their rocky ridges, despite the mountain group's relatively compact footprint. The surrounding Tatra massif extends across the Polish border, giving the Slovak summits a shared alpine setting within the much wider and more varied Carpathian arc.
