Chirripó, Kámuk and Dúrika focus on Costa Rica's southern highland spine. These mountains belong to the rugged interior between the country's Pacific and Caribbean sides, contrasting with the coastal plains and the lower terrain beyond the principal ranges.
Costa Rica's interior is generally cooler than its tropical coastal lowlands. Rainfall follows broad wetter and drier seasons, but the mountains occupy a different elevation setting from either shore. The southern ranges are also geographically separate from the volcanic mountains closer to San José.
