Pico Duarte and La Rucilla place this group in the Dominican Republic's principal inland mountain landscape. The selected high ground belongs to the interior of Hispaniola, a markedly different setting from the coastal plains and Caribbean beaches around the island's margins.
Hispaniola contains considerable relief within a tropical maritime setting, with the Dominican Republic occupying its eastern portion. Seasonal rainfall varies more than temperatures. Pico Duarte's mountain country is geographically separate from the country's lower inland basins as well as from the surrounding coastal plains.
