The Apaneca area belongs to El Salvador's elevated volcanic interior, behind the narrower Pacific coastal plain. These named mountains give a regional focus within a country where uplands and a central plateau occupy much of the terrain between coast and northern border.
El Salvador faces the Pacific and has no Caribbean coast. Its uplands are more temperate than the tropical shoreline, while the broader rainfall cycle includes wetter and drier seasons. The Apaneca landscape belongs to that interior elevation zone above the coastal belt.
