The central mountains are a defining feature of Grenada's volcanic landscape. Saint Catherine and the other selected elevations rise within a compact island setting, with the Caribbean and Atlantic shores providing a close contrast to the higher interior.
Mount Saint Catherine is Grenada's highest mountain and gives the island's interior its most prominent landmark. Northeast trade winds influence this tropical setting, where the central volcanic relief separates short coastal catchments rather than the long river valleys of a continental range.
