The landscapes of Kiribati
Kiribati is an extensive Pacific nation dominated by low coral atolls. Reefs, lagoons and enormous ocean distances define its geography, so its islands do not provide the conventional mountain landscape suggested by a three summit challenge.
Banaba is a raised island west of the main Gilbert Islands, whereas most of Kiribati's land belongs to coral atolls. The Phoenix and Line Islands extend the country across a vast ocean area. These distances and island forms are its defining geography; ordinary mountain terminology would obscure the landscape that actually exists.
