Chile is a long, narrow country between the Pacific and the Andes. Northern desert, central valleys and the cooler south create very different contexts for mountain travel along its length.
The landscapes of Chile
The Andes remain a constant presence, but the landscape changes greatly from the northern desert to the cooler south. Central Chile adds fertile valleys and a separate coastal range between the mountains and Pacific. A mountain enquiry should identify a region first: a northern volcanic objective and a southern Andean journey are very different experiences within the same long country.
