Three Peaks challenges in Guyana
Guyana combines a low Atlantic coastal strip with rolling highlands and southern savanna. Its interior landscapes deserve a regional approach, without confusing neighbouring countries' famous table mountains with objectives inside Guyana.
The landscapes of Guyana
Guyana's narrow Atlantic coastal plain gives way inland to rolling highlands and extensive forest. Southern savanna adds a further landscape, so the country's interior is not one uniform block of mountain terrain but a series of contrasting regions.
The Pakaraima mountains occupy the western interior, while the Rupununi savannas lie farther south. Both are remote from the densely settled coastal strip. River systems link the country's forested uplands to lower ground, but they do not erase the considerable geographical distances between coastal Guyana and its interior highlands.
