Three Peaks challenges in Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau's deeply indented coastline and offshore islands are mostly low lying. The transition toward eastern savanna, rather than major mountains, provides the principal inland contrast for a landscape journey.

The landscapes of Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is chiefly a lowland destination, shaped by an indented Atlantic coastline, estuaries and offshore islands. The Bijagós archipelago extends that coastal geography into a seascape of islands and channels rather than a chain of mountain summits.

The Bijagós islands belong to the coastal and marine setting, while the eastern interior approaches the higher ground of neighbouring Guinea. Much of the intervening country remains low and gently undulating. Its landscape interest comes from this transition between waterways, coastal plains and inland savanna, rather than dramatic changes in altitude.
