Three Peaks challenges in Madagascar

Madagascar's central plateau and mountain country contrast with lower coastal landscapes. The island's long isolation gives its natural setting a distinctive character, making regional geography an important part of any inland journey.

The landscapes of Madagascar

Madagascar's central plateau and mountains stand apart from its lower coastal landscapes. The island's elongated shape and varied relief create several inland regions, rather than one compact mountain group surrounded by a uniform coastal plain.

The Tsaratanana massif stands in northern Madagascar, with Maromokotro among its summits. The central highlands extend through a different interior setting, while the island's western and southern regions become progressively drier. Ankaratra and Andringitra are separate highland areas, each belonging to a different part of this long and geographically varied island.
