Three Peaks challenges in Mauritania
Mauritania sits between the Maghreb and the Sahel, with extensive desert country inland. Rocky uplands and isolated high ground add variety to a landscape also shaped by the Atlantic coast and Senegal River.
The landscapes of Mauritania
Mauritania's landscape lies between the Sahara and the Sahel, with an Atlantic coast and a southern boundary shaped in part by the Senegal River. Extensive desert plains are interrupted by rocky uplands and isolated high ground in the interior.
The Adrar Plateau occupies west-central desert country, with escarpments and rocky terrain interrupting surrounding plains. Kediet Ijill lies farther north near Zouérat, forming a separate massif. Southern Mauritania approaches the Sahel and Senegal River, while the Atlantic margin presents a different low coastal landscape from these interior uplands and desert formations.
