Three Peaks challenges in Niger
Niger is dominated by desert plains and dunes, with hills and mountains in the north. The contrast between Saharan uplands and the flatter southern country gives its regions very different landscape identities.
The landscapes of Niger
Niger is dominated by desert plains and dunes, with more pronounced hills and mountains in the north. The southern part of the country grades towards flatter Sahelian landscapes, creating a substantial geographical contrast with the Saharan interior.
The Aïr massif rises in north-central Niger, with Idoukal-n-Taghès among its high ground. The Ténéré desert extends to the east, while the country's more settled southern belt lies much farther away. Rocky uplands and surrounding sand landscapes create a recognisable Saharan region, distinct from the lower Sahelian country towards the southern boundaries.
