Three Peaks challenges in Rwanda
Rwanda's grassy uplands and hills rise toward more mountainous country in the west. Its compact highland geography creates considerable variation in landscape between the western ranges and lower eastern areas.
The landscapes of Rwanda
Rwanda's relief generally declines from west to east. Grassy uplands and hills occupy much of the country, with more mountainous ground towards the west and lower terrain farther east. Valleys and lakes add further variation within this compact inland setting.
The elevated landscape moderates the tropical latitude, and rainfall has two broad seasonal peaks. Mountain country and lower eastern areas still differ in their local setting. Rwanda's geographical character is therefore one of closely spaced changes in relief, rather than a vast separation between distant mountain chains and lowland plains.
