The landscapes of Sao Tome and Principe

São Tomé and Príncipe are volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea, west of mainland central Africa. Their mountainous interiors rise within an equatorial Atlantic setting, with the ocean surrounding each island rather than linking the high ground into a continuous range.

The climate is hot and humid, with a prolonged wetter period. The islands' steep relief creates a strong contrast with their lower coastal margins. Their mountain landscapes are therefore best understood as separate volcanic interiors, each connected geographically to its own shoreline and the wider maritime archipelago.
