Three Peaks challenges in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone rises from a coastal belt of mangrove country through hills to inland plateaus and mountains. Its eastern and northern uplands provide a different landscape from the low Atlantic shoreline.
The landscapes of Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone's Atlantic edge includes mangrove lowlands, followed inland by wooded hills and an elevated plateau. More mountainous country lies towards the east, creating a progression from low coastal terrain to higher interior landscapes rather than one uniform national setting.
The climate is tropical and humid, with a long rainy period and a drier part of the year. The eastern uplands belong to that broader West African environment, but their relief sets them apart from the coast. Plateau, hills and mountain country together provide the physical context for the country's inland destinations.
