Three Peaks challenges in Tanzania
Tanzania combines coastal plains, a central plateau and several highland regions. Kilimanjaro's volcanic cones form a distinctive northern mountain landscape, with different physical forms and very different summit considerations.
The landscapes of Tanzania
Tanzania's central plateau is bordered by coastal plains and several highland regions. Kilimanjaro forms a particularly distinctive northern volcanic landscape, while other higher ground lies elsewhere in the north and south. The Indian Ocean coast provides a very different physical setting from these inland uplands.
The climate ranges broadly from tropical coastal conditions to cooler highland environments. Kilimanjaro's separate volcanic cones have different forms, making the mountain more complex than a single symmetrical summit. That northern landscape is one part of Tanzania's wider combination of plateau, highlands and low coastal country.
