Three Peaks challenges in Philippines
The Philippines combines mountainous island interiors with coastal lowlands of very different widths. Its archipelagic geography makes the island and region chosen as important as the individual mountain objectives.
The landscapes of Philippines
Mountainous interiors occupy much of the Philippine archipelago, but the coastal lowlands vary from narrow strips to more extensive plains. Sea channels separate these island landscapes, making the particular island an essential part of the geographical identity of any mountain group.
The islands have a tropical maritime climate influenced by northeast and southwest monsoons at different times of year. Their mountain country sits within this oceanic setting rather than a large continental interior. Coastal terrain, uplands and neighbouring islands can therefore provide markedly different perspectives on the same region.
