Three Peaks challenges in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan combines sandy deserts and broad river valleys with mountain country toward the east. The Fergana region and western Tien Shan provide a contrasting upland setting to the drier lowlands.
The landscapes of Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan's broad sandy deserts and river valleys contrast with higher terrain towards the east. The Amu Darya, Syr Darya and Zarafshan provide major lowland axes, while the Fergana region sits close to the mountain country of neighbouring Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Long, hot summers and a predominantly dry continental climate characterise much of the country, with more semiarid grassland in the east. The western Tien Shan uplands therefore occupy a different setting from the extensive desert plains. Eastern relief and the adjoining valleys provide the principal geographical context for its mountain destinations.
