Sněžka and Dívčí Kameny belong to the northern border mountain landscape, while Ještěd lies farther west. Their arrangement spans separate upland areas around the Bohemian basin, reflecting the varied relief along this side of the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic is landlocked, with much of Bohemia enclosed by uplands and Moravia occupying a different basin-and-hill setting. Its northern mountains experience a cool temperate climate with cold, humid winters. These ranges provide an elevated rim to the country's lower interior landscapes.
