Three Peaks challenges in Hungary
Hungary's broad plains are balanced by northern hills and low mountains. Its upland destinations offer a gentler scale of relief than the high ranges surrounding the wider Carpathian Basin.
The landscapes of Hungary
Hungary's broad plains are balanced by hills and low mountains, particularly in the north near Slovakia. These uplands belong to the landscape of the Carpathian Basin, but their scale is gentler than the high ranges around its outer edges.
Kékes stands in the Mátra, while the neighbouring Bükk forms another northern upland region. Across the Danube, the Transdanubian hills and mountains occupy a separate setting west of the great plains. Hungary's mountain geography is therefore a collection of wooded uplands around broad lowland basins, rather than one continuous high range.
