Three Peaks challenges in Romania

Romania's Carpathian ranges curve around the Transylvanian Basin. Southern mountain landscapes contrast with the lower plains beyond them, while individual ridges and named summits need to be distinguished carefully.

The landscapes of Romania

The Carpathian arc helps define Romania's central geography. The Eastern Carpathians separate the Transylvanian Basin from the Moldavian Plateau, while the Southern Carpathians stand between that basin and the Wallachian Plain. These ranges create distinct mountain regions around a lower interior.

Cold winters bring snow and fog, while summer weather can include showers and thunderstorms. Romania's mountain landscape is consequently more than a collection of isolated summits: ridges, basins and the surrounding plains form a connected geographical setting, with different parts of the Carpathians retaining their own character.
