Three Peaks challenges in Nicaragua
Nicaragua combines Atlantic coastal plains, central mountains and a Pacific belt interrupted by volcanoes. Its inland highlands provide one of several distinct landscape settings within this Central American country.
The landscapes of Nicaragua
Nicaragua contains three contrasting broad landscapes: Atlantic coastal plains, central interior mountains and a narrower Pacific region interrupted by volcanoes. These settings give mountain browsing several distinct directions within the same Central American country.
Mogotón belongs to the northern highlands near Honduras, while the Pacific volcanic chain runs through western Nicaragua. Lakes Managua and Nicaragua occupy a broad lower basin alongside that volcanic country. East of the central mountains, extensive plains descend towards the Caribbean, forming a different landscape from either the northern uplands or western volcanoes.
