El Tucuche and the other selected elevations belong to northern Trinidad's hill and mountain country. This setting contrasts with the island's broader lower plains and is geographically separate from Tobago's own interior landscape across the sea to the northeast.
Trinidad's Northern Range runs along the island's northern side, above lower country around the Caroni basin. El Tucuche belongs to this ridge-and-valley landscape. Its geological and geographical setting connects more closely with the nearby South American mainland than with the coral-island landscapes found in some other parts of the Caribbean.
